The UK government have committed to driverless cars being on our streets by 2021. Network provider and IoT innovators, O2, have seized their opportunity to partner with Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) to trial driverless vehicles in the West Midlands.
O2 is currently developing what it claims to be Europe’s largest fibre connected small cell network which will support the trials. They will be providing the connectivity which will form a 50-mile route that will run through Birmingham and Coventry.
It’s hoped that this kind of technology will reduce traffic congestion and save the economy up to £800 million a year in lost productivity caused by congestion. Not only that, but it will help reduce CO2 emissions by around 370,000 metric tonnes per year.
